Benefits of Outpatient Total Joint Surgery

The mere thought of having surgery is too much for some, and for others, it’s the idea of having to spend a few days in a hospital room to recover that keeps them from going ahead with a much needed hip replacement surgery. But at OrthoUnited, we make the whole process—from initial consultation to post-op recovery—as easy and comfortable as possible for you. One way we are able to do this is with outpatient total joint surgery, which gets you in and out of surgery and back home to start the recovery process all in the same day.

What is outpatient total joint surgery?

Traditionally performed as inpatient procedures, total hip replacement, total knee replacement, and partial knee replacement surgeries can now be performed on an outpatient basis. This allows patients to go home just hours after surgery and return to their normal activities within 2 to 4 weeks, as opposed to 2 to 3 months following traditional hip or knee replacement surgery.

What are the benefits of having outpatient total joint surgery?

1. Ability to recover in the comfort of your own home

Recovering in your own home helps eliminate the risk of hospital-acquired infections. Plus, you get to be surrounded by your loved ones and the things that make you feel comfortable rather than spending the night in a hospital room.

2. Smaller incisions

It’s natural to be nervous about undergoing surgery, but many of the things people feel nervous about can actually be diminished with outpatient total joint surgical methods utilizing smaller incisions.

Smaller incisions will result in:

  • Less pain and swelling
  • Decreased scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Minimal blood loss during surgery and reduced risk of complications
  • Less damage to surrounding tissues
  • Increased range of motion after surgery

Why choose OrthoUnited for outpatient total joint replacement?

Orthopaedic practices strive for the Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement with The Joint Commission. OrthoUnited was the first outpatient center in the country to receive this accreditation.
