Total Joint Replacement
Joint Replacement Surgeons in North Canton, Oh
When lifestyle changes and medication are no longer effective in easing joint pain, total joint replacement surgery is often recommended. Using this advanced procedure, our surgeons are able to remove the damaged portion of your joint and replace it with an artificial implant made of metal, plastic, or ceramic, called a prosthesis. This device is designed to replicate the movement of a normal, functioning joint.
The most commonly performed joint replacements involve the hip and knee, but total replacement surgery also can be performed on other joints such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and ankle. At Spectrum Orthopaedics, our surgeons employ the latest techniques in shoulder, hip, and knee replacement, including minimally invasive procedures for knee and hip replacement and same-day joint replacement. Spectrum Orthopaedics is Northeast Ohio's leader in outpatient total joint replacement.
During joint replacement surgery, the doctor will remove damaged cartilage and bone from your joint and replace the joint with the prosthetic components, which simulate the movement of a natural joint.
In the case of an arthritic hip, for example, a damaged ball on the upper end of the femur bone is replaced with an artificial ball attached to a stem that is fitted into the femur. At the same time, an artificial socket is implanted into the pelvis, thus replacing the damaged socket. The procedure takes a few hours and is performed in a hospital or outpatient surgery center.
If you have severe arthritis or another condition that limits your ability to move without pain, you might be a candidate for joint replacement surgery.
