Knee Injuries

Comprehensive Care for Knee Pain

The knees are two of the largest and most complex joints in the body. The knee consists of two joints—one joining the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia), and the other joining the fibula and the kneecap (patella). As hinge joints, the knees allow us to flex and extend our legs with slight rotation.

While knee injuries are most common in athletes, they are also prevalent in older adults struggling with osteoarthritis or other orthopaedic conditions. No matter the cause, our knee specialists can help you get on the path toward healing. Learn more about the conditions we treat below!

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear - The ACL is one of the most commonly injured ligaments of the knee. An ACL tear occurs when the ligament has been split or torn in two.
  • Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tear - A PCL tear occurs inside the knee joint, most commonly from being hit in the knee or falling on bended knee. Most PCL tears are partial and may be able to heal on their own.
  • Meniscus tear - A torn meniscus is the result of a swift or sudden twist or pivot of the knee. If you’ve torn your meniscus, you will have experienced a popping sensation in the knee.
  • Cartilage defects - Articular cartilage defects are a common knee injury related to sports and overuse, but can also be a result of osteonecrosis, osteochondritis, and other conditions. Cartilage damage can worsen over time if not dealt with properly.
  • Chondral defects - Similar to cartilage defects, chondral defects refer to damage of the articular cartilage as well as an underlying portion of the bone.
  • Patellar tendon tear - The patellar tendon allows you to stand up straight. A tear to this tendon will cause it to separate from the kneecap, and left untreated, can cause weakness of the quadriceps.
  • Knee tendon bursitis - Bursae in the knee help reduce friction and cushion pressure in the knee joint. Knee tendon bursitis occurs when a bursa, or small, fluid-filled sac, is inflamed.
  • Knee osteoarthritis - Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage in the knee gradually wears away. Without the presence of cartilage in the knee, you will experience pressure and friction that leads to inflammation and pain in the knee.
  • Patellofemoral syndrome (runner’s knee) - Runner’s knee is characterized by pain at the front of your knee, around the kneecap or patella. This is most common in athletes.
